This was a bit of an adventure – we were picked up from the hotel in a tuk-tuk and taken to the river bank where we boarded a small narrow boat low in the water.
The journey to Hpa-An was about 4 hours up the River Thanlwin. I’d never heard of it but for much of the trip it’s over a mile wide. The boatman kept us reasonably close to the bank where he could so that we could see what we were passing. Lots of fishing, laundry and bathing in the river, waving and shouting kids, pagodas of course. A lovely relaxing trip.
