BUS FROM HPA-AN TO YANGON

As we were waiting for the bus a long line of monks – a couple of hundred, all ages – passed by after their morning round of collecting food donations. Close to where we were sitting was the point where they would empty what they had into large sacks. We couldn’t understand how it worked – they must have all been receiving the same thing otherwise it would all have got mixed together, which doesn’t seem sensible. In any event we saw several sackloads being filled.

Our french friend from the previous day was also travelling on the same bus – he was planning to be away for many weeks, going on to Thailand and Vietnam, but amazingly had only a tiny backpack – about a foot square and about 8 inches deep – plus a small bag for camera gear. I think we need to reassess how much we need to take with us…………
The trip was largely retracing the route of our early bus journey from Yangon so the main point of interest was a conversation Pam had with the person across the aisle. He was a local from Yangon and spoke very good English and told us he was a pastor for the Seventh Day Adventist church. Funded by a parent church in USA, his job is to convert people from Buddhism to the SDA beliefs. Words fail me sometimes…………….
We were heading north the following day so on arrival back at the Yangon bus station – still a zoo – we got a taxi to a hotel near the airport. Not a bad place with a lovely swimming pool where we spent a relaxing hour or so in the afternoon. But the restaurant was terrible – probably the worst meal of our trip, and ludicrously overpriced.
